Norfolk’s City Council recently approved plans for a new casino and resort.
Did you know local government leaders could bring new opportunities to an area? After much discussion, consideration, and a change of ownership to Las Vegas’ Boyd Gaming, the final building plans were recently approved for a new casino and resort in a 7-1 vote.
The $500 million project will be located next to Norfolk’s Harbor Park.
The resort will consist of a 200-room hotel, 50 table games, 1,500 slot machines, and eight bars and restaurants.
The plans for this resort have changed many times since its proposal in 2020. Tennessee billionaire Jon Yarbrough was the project’s original sponsor, but it since changed hands to Boyd Gaming.
The original blueprints were also less grand than the current ones, as the original plans only projected 750 slots, 25 game tables, and 150 hotel rooms.
The casino is dedicated on behalf of the Pamunkey Indian Tribe and is expected to bring thousands of jobs to the city’s local economy.
Norfolk’s Mayor Kenny Alexander says the plan is to break ground starting next year, and the entire project should be completed by 2027.
If the casino brings in revenue like Danville’s temporary Caesars Virginia location, it’ll be a major economic driver in the area. In July alone, Caesars brought in $18.8 million in revenue.
